Your Kiddo's First Pet

Is your child ready for a pet, but you may not feel they are prepared for a dog or a cat? Pet ownership is a big responsibility, and you want your kiddo to have the best experience, but they first need to learn the ins and outs of owning a pet.

So, what are some other options for pets? This blog gives you a list of low-maintenance small animals to help train your kiddo for pet ownership.

1. Fish

Fish are probably the most low-maintenance pets to own, and you can even start small with a beta fish. They can live up to three years, so you won't have to worry about replacing a delicate fish anytime soon.

2. Birds

Finches and canaries are entertaining and fascinating to watch. If your kiddo loves to watch birds outside, see if they would love to have them as pets! Teach your child to handle the bird cautiously as they are very delicate.

3. Geckos

If your kiddo is ten years or older, we recommend getting a gecko for a pet. While handling them requires patience, they can live up to 20 years! You and your child should find several kinds of bugs to feed the gecko.

4. Guinea Pigs

As mentioned in our previous blog, guinea pigs are fun but require just as much work to maintain. They are a fitting pet for kids and teach them a routine and structure.

5. Turtles

Turtles are great for smaller children specifically. They are low maintenance after the initial setup. They are also entertaining and educational for children to play with.

Animals can play a significant role in helping your minds grow. They are an excellent opportunity to teach structure they can incorporate into their daily routines. It teaches them responsibility, and if the end game is to get a bigger pet like a dog, they can also learn by taking care of any of these suggestions first.
